FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why is accreditation important for a school?

WSYC is accredited by the National Association for the Education for Young Children (NAEYC) - the most rigorous accreditation process for early childhood education. Accreditation ensures that we maintain a developed curriculum, a highly-qualified staff (90% of our faculty have a Bachelor’s degree or higher and ⅓ have a Master’s degree), and low student-to-teacher ratios.

  • Can I apply early to join your waitlist?

WSYC does not roll over waitlists from year to year, so there is no need to apply earlier than is indicated on the admissions calendar.  We suggest you contact Lisa Croney, Assistant Director, at 615-297-0235 or lcroney@wsycnashville.org for a better idea of when and whether or not you should apply for the current academic year (August-May) or wait to apply for the upcoming academic year.  The admissions calendar can be found here

  • What are the school hours?

WSYC students are on campus from 8:45-noon on Mondays and 8:45-2:00, Tuesday through Friday.  Monday afternoons are dedicated to teacher professional development, faculty meetings, planning, and working in the classroom.  We find this time to be important to providing the highest-quality preschool experience for your child.

1s and 2s attend either Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday.  3s attend either Monday/Wednesday/Friday; Tuesday/Thursday; or Monday through Friday.  4s attend either Monday through Thursday or Monday through Friday.  5s attend Monday through Friday.  WSYC does not offer before- or after-care.

  • What about summer?

WSYC offers a six-week summer camp, Camp Westminster.  Details about Camp are released in February each year.  Camp is approximately half the size of the regular school year and is in very high demand.  Camp Westminster is only open to currently enrolled students.

  • What do I need to send for my child that will stay at school?

In the 1s and 2s, please send an unopened package of diapers and a change of clothes (including shoes).  Please label everything with your child’s name.  We will let you know if these things need to be replaced.

In the 3s and 4s, please send an unopened package of Pull-Ups (if needed), a pair of rain boots and a rain jacket, and a change of clothes (including shoes).  Please label everything with your child’s name.  We will let you know if these things need to be replaced.

In the 5s, please send a pair of rain boots and a rain jacket, and a change of clothes (including shoes).  Please label everything with your child’s name.  We will let you know if these things need to be replaced.

  • What does my child need to bring to school every day?

Your child will need to bring their lunch in a hard, wipeable container labeled with their name.  It is best to label using a sticker so the name does not easily wipe off.  WSYC provides all needed utensils.  Students in the 1s, 2s, and 3s should bring their Happi-Nappi (you will purchase this from WSYC at the start of the school year) on the first day of the week they attend school (Monday or Tuesday) - it will be sent home on the last day of the week they attend school for laundering (Thursday or Friday).  Students who need a special lovey for napping should send that on the first day they attend school (Monday or Tuesday) - it will be sent home on the last day of the week they attend school for laundering (Thursday or Friday).

  • Are pacifiers allowed?

Yes, pacifiers are allowed at all times in the 1s and 2s and during naps in the 3s.

  • Is WSYC nut-free?

All 1s and 2s classrooms are completely nut-free at all times.

For the 3s, 4s, and 5s, this is classroom-dependent.  Your teachers will let you know prior to the start of school if there is an allergy in your classroom and any restrictions on what you can send.

  • What about snack?

WSYC provides a snack every day for each classroom.  Snacks are checked for allergens if needed - a daily posting may be found outside of your classroom.

  • What about drinks?

WSYC provides milk and/or water for lunch and/or snack daily.  We also provide iced water on all of the playgrounds.

  • I have another question - who should I ask?
